When it comes to the topic of non-toxic candles, there’s a LOT to be said about what’s truly a safer candle and what’s not. (see my post here doing an in-depth deep dive on candle research and regulations for more information on this) It’s easier to find a safe beeswax candle, but vegan candles are hard to come by! (soy wax is complicated and I really don’t recommend it…see post mentioned above for more on that too) That’s why I was SHOCKED and SO excited to find the brand Pure Plant Home!! (discount code at the bottom!)
What Makes Pure Plant Home Candles Safe?
- Woman owned and run, Tina, is a mother and certified aromatherapist of 28 years! She also has a formal degree in kinesiology and masters in exercise science. She started her candle making business mostly because she and her vegan daughters couldn’t find any truly safe vegan candle options to enjoy!
- Unlike every other brand I’ve seen that merely mix coconut oil into their wax blend, Pure Plant Home is made entirely from parts of a coconut (not just the coconut oil you’d get in a store)!! Coconut oil on it’s own, because of the consistency, could never be the sole wax ingredient, that’s why it took them 3 years to create and perfect how to make a wax solely from coconuts!! This is the first brand I’ve ever seen accomplish this!!
- All scents are derived entirely from 100% pure essential oils! No synthetic fragrances whatsoever! She only buys the highest quality oils from reputable farms/sellers. (Being an aromatherapist, she has access to/ relationships with some well established third party sellers! Same oils she uses as an aromatherapist)
- The wax is not chemically treated or bleached in any way and no pesticides were used on the coconut trees
- The wicks are 100% unbleached cotton
- Coconut derived wax is arguably the most sustainable option as, “The coconut palm tree is known as a “three generation” tree which means it can support a farmer, her children and their grandchildren. One tree lives and bears fruit for up to 60 years.” MUCH more sustainable long term then soy wax especially!
I had the privilege of getting to talk with Tina on the phone for a while, grill her with questions and pick her brain, and I love the passion, expertise, and knowledge she brings to her candles! I’m confident all her products are not only completely safe for human health, but also very high quality!
Candle Reviews
Overall: Pros -Medium to strong scents that filled a room well, cheaper prices comparably to most other brands, very wide selection of unique scents, and love the various sizes she sells. The glass containers were easier to open then the tin ones, but love all the different colored and types of containers you can get on their site (including just naked votive candles with no jars!)
Cons -Not quite as long burn time because of the very low temp melting point of the coconut wax compared to beeswax candles, so it burns down quicker and the wick gets longer faster because of that. I found that if you trim the wick more often while burning however, (like every 20 mins) it wouldn’t burn down quite as quickly which was good. It also produced a LOT of smoke (particulate matter therefore) when blown out which I didn’t like as much as far as clean burning and air quality goes. Still looking for a way to reduce the smoke at the end. Not a huge problem though in the grand scheme of things since it’s only when blown out.
Wildcrafted French Lavender -This was probably my favorite scent, though it’s hard to pick just one. The sourcing and type of lavender essential oil used in this candle makes all the difference!!! It’s slightly sweeter smelling then other lavenders…almost like a hint of vanilla to it! A subtle lavender smell; great candle to start out with!! Classic but with a sweet twist!
Ylang Ylang, Jasmine, & Vanilla -ok I honestly thought I was going to like the smell of this one more because I love all these smells individually…it almost smelled too sweet for me though? Like there was too much vanilla maybe? Definitely unique and stronger then some of the other scents which I liked…but yeah not as much of a favorite for me. If you like very sweet flowery smelling this is for you!
Valencia Orange & Grapefruit -I loved this scent! Second favorite for sure! Its a very sweet fruity unique smell! Definitely not the standard fruit smell! Perfect blend of the vanilla and fruits but not too overpowering; more of a medium-ly strong scent when burned. Very springy and refreshing smelling! Mine’s almost out on this jar and I’ve burned it about 10 times or so. (It’s a 3.1 oz)
Ginger & Vanilla Plantifolia -Another one I’m honestly shocked I didn’t love more because I usually love ginger!! This one smelled very similar to me as the ylang ylang one except less flowery. It could just be my pregnancy nose at the moment lol but not as much a favorite. It’s like the ratio isn’t right and it’s too sweet again. It is a more subtle, less strong smell when burned however.
Peace On Earth -Third favorite scent! Another one I LOVE!! Smells strong and like a cinnamon dulche latte! lol Very warm and spicy and channeling the fall and winter vibes for sure. Stronger scent compared to the others. The tin lid is a little hard to get off sometimes but this smaller size and less breakable container travels VERY well! Also love the cheaper price on this size!
Wish On A Star -this peppermint and vanilla combo is amazinggggg!!!! It’s not just the standard peppermint, the vanilla twist to it makes it smell like a peppermint candy! Like an Andes candy or think mint cookie girl scout cookie or something. lol It smells amazing!! Both uplifting but also calming somehow. Definitely recommend giving this one a try! The tin lid is a little hard to get off sometimes but this smaller size and less breakable container travels Very well! Also love the cheaper price on this size!
