Looking for an in-depth, honest annmarie skin care review of the brand and products? In this blog post I review 12 popular Annmarie Skin Care products and share some of the research I did into the brand and explain why it meets the “clean living mom criteria”.
*Disclosure: after trying a ton of the products and loving the brand, I became an affiliate. (you can shop through my Annmarie link and support my blog HERE) However, as you read on you’ll see I’m still very honest in my reviews on the products and brand as a whole. Annmarie Brand Review
Annmarie Skin Care, like many clean beauty brands, was started by Annmarie and Kevin after searching for and not being able to find high quality products that met their high standards. They found and partnered with Bunnie, a chemist and herbalist who had been formulating organic skin care products for over 30 years and expanded her line of products.
Why they meet the Clean Living Mom Criteria and are unique as a company:
- full ingredient transparency: they disclose every ingredient for every product including their perfume! They also give additional really cool sourcing information for the key ingredients for each product (found on each individual product page) and the country of origin sourcing on the ingredients glossary page.
- majority of their ingredients are in fact naturally derived and are wildcrafted or organic and “All of our products go through the most minimal amount of processing possible, if any, to ensure that the alive and active ingredients are not jeopardized.”
- I’ve literally never heard of a company doing this before, but during the formulating process which happens in the Colorado Rockies, they use a natural spring as a water source and hold a high vibrational space with intentional use of crystals, sacred geometry and music to better the “energy” of the products. SO interesting!
- they do extensive shelf life testing of various kinds and heavy metal/contamination testings
- they are made safe certified…one of my favorite certifications that in my opinion, is actually legit!
- every product I’ve seen/tried is bottled in dark amber glass bottles which I LOVE!
A few things to note: I wouldn’t be clean living mom if I didn’t mention what I’d love to see changed and don’t really agree with lol…
- they claim their products are “all natural” in several places and I don’t have an issue with this at all if in fact every. single. ingredient. is naturally derived…however, they have a few ingredients that are not naturally derived and are synthetic…which is fine…you just can’t claim “all natural” anymore because the very definition of natural is that nothing synthetic is in it lol. In my opinion, this becomes greenwashing and false marketing because it’s not true and just a phrase a company is then using to fit a certain clientele etc. I think it often times also just perpetuates a false idea that anything synthetic is inherently bad and should be avoided. Which is extra ironic that a company that puts so much emphasis on natural being superior is even using “synthetic” ingredients at all! haha I’d so much rather see education on why they chose the few synthetic ingredients that they did and why they are in fact better then a naturally derived option (i.e. some regulations actually require synthetically derived and it’s GOOD that they are following that regulation or the synthetic alternative is actually less contaminated etc)
- in a video on their site and in a few reviews they promote of their products on various pages, the phrase “chemical free” is used to describe their products. (Albeit, not used as often as I’ve seen other companies do) I’m VERY against this phrase as it is impossible and either an ignorant move or a greenwashing or fear mongering tactic. A product can NEVER be chemical free because every ingredient is a chemical!! Touting chemical free just further perpetuates the false idea that all chemicals are bad and that chemical is synonymous with “ingredient”, which it’s not! A single essential oil being listed as a single ingredient has dozens (depending on the oil) of chemical constituents in it’s make up. And water is a “chemical” and obviously water isn’t bad, it’s essential! lol In my opinion, we need to hold companies accountable here, educate ourselves, and convey that yes we want transparency and safe products but NOT at the expense of accuracy. We the consumer aren’t stupid…there are better terms to convey a product is safe for human health then something that is physically impossible. The terms we use matters. (More on this topic HERE) Ok rant done. Thank you for coming to that ted talk. lol
Annmarie Skincare Product Reviews
Check out my annmarie skin care routine video I made with my mom showing two different routines catered towards more oily/ combination skin and mature skin! In the video we do first impressions of each product, talk about each product a bit, and show the order multiple annmarie products are to be used in!
Overall: All of the skincare products smell and feel very quality and “real”, if you will. The overall smell of all of them is very earthy and woody, not very “flowery” and “girly”…many of these products could easily be gender neutral!
Radiant Skin Silk Body Lotion: very light, not too thick or heavy lotion. Goes on smoothly, rubs in easily, and absorbs very quickly. Great for when you’re wanting just a nice light lotion after showering and getting dressed quickly after. It does take several pumps (the pumps are small)…on average I’d use about 6-8 pumps just on my legs alone. My skin always felt soft and well moisturized after, it never irritated my skin at all (even over cuts from shaving), and even though I used a lot each time, it did last about 2-3 months. Nice smell, not too overpoweringly strong.
Kaolin Micro Exfoliant: My new top favorite/ top recommendation for a really effective exfoliator!!! It has a dark grey color to it and subtle smell. This stuff has a super super fine grainy texture, which I love!!! Most exfoliants I feel like don’t actually do much, but not this product!! Very effective at exfoliating and definitely always notice a difference in how soft my skin feels after using it! Comes in a metal tube package which can be slightly hard to get everything out of, but I’ve found what really works is the David’s toothpaste key which helps roll it up and get everything out of it…game changer!! Because of how fine the grains are, it might potentially be too harsh for sensitive skin. I personally have combination skin and it’s been amazing for helping unclog those really stubborn oily spots on my face that feels really dirty. As long as I moisturize well afterwards, it hasn’t been an issue on the drier spots on my face. I’ve also used this as a lip scrub to remove dead skin and it worked wonders!!! If you’re going to be wearing a matte lipstick or stay on lippie, rub this on your lips an hour or two before, follow up with a thick lip moisturizer, then apply makeup after the lip balm soaks in. It’ll help any lip product last longer/wear smoother! Overall, highly recommend!!!
Restorative Cleansing Oil: Another new, top favorite recommendation!! This is now my very favorite facial cleansing oil to recommend to people! Great for all skin types, removes all makeup off the face really well, including eye makeup, and best of all, it doesn’t sting your eyes when using as an eye makeup remover!! That’s huge because most I’ve tried do! Removes even mascara that’s tough to get off really well. This has a very natural “bug spray” like smell to it to me because of the lemongrass ingredient in it, so if that’s not your favorite smell, you might not like this. I didn’t mind it since you can’t really smell it after applying other products on top of it. My favorite way to use this was either alone on a cotton ball to just take off mascara real quick (if that’s all I wore that day makeup wise), or as a step 1 in the skincare routine process. For best results, apply to dry face, use a warm wet washcloth to remove then follow up with a water based cleanser.
Botanical Hydration Mist: I usually think hydration mists are sort of dumb, I’m not going to lie. haha However, I was surprised how often I used this one! It has a very grounding, earthy smell with a hint of chamomile. I would spray this on my face after washing just for the smell honestly and as an extra herbal benefit to the skin before applying a serum. I love the loaded anti-aging ingredients! Great for all skin types, especially dry! My biggest testimonial with this product was using it on a bride the week before I did her wedding makeup. She had severe sensitive and dry skin with some eczema patches on her face, neck, and eye lids especially. I had her apply several sprays to the face/ neck area and immediately follow up (don’t wait til it dries) with an intense moisture face cream. She did that routine for a few days straight and it made such a difference! She’d already been doing the face wash and cream routine, so I got to see the difference just this one product added into her routine made to her skin! It helped lock in moisture, calmed the inflamed and textures areas, and even made her skin dewy, which was amazing! The makeup went on smoother and didn’t irritate or dry out her skin because of it!
Citrus Mint Cleanser: the cleanser is very aptly named as the scent was very minty…but not in a toothpaste kind of way. Pretty strong scent and I love how it kind of makes your face tingle when you apply it! It really feels like it’s awakening your face as you’re using it! Kind of has a gel like consistency to it and gets slightly more creamy as you rub it in. Seems like it would work well for most all skin types. Gentle and not irritating at all. Cons -I did have to use about 6 pumps per use. Also, this was a very “light to medium duty” I would say, cleanser. It wasn’t powerful enough for my oily skin to really make my skin feel 100% clean when used on it’s own. If I had any type of makeup on my face, or just hadn’t washed my face in a while it didn’t get everything…very close but if I swabbed my face with a cotton ball with toner on it after washing then drying, it wouldn’t be totally clean. If used in combination with the scrub or the oil, it was much better! It worked best on it’s own just on the drier spots on my cheeks.
Phytonutrient Cleanser: this was my personal favorite of the two cleansers I tried. It’s really hard to describe this cleansers scent, but I really loved it! Very sweet earthy smelling. It does have a more creamy consistency to it which I liked. Much like the citrus mint cleanser review, I would say this is the same “light to medium duty” kind of cleanser. It wasn’t powerful enough for my oily skin to really make my skin feel 100% clean when used on it’s own. Again, it worked best when used as a step 2 majority of the time. I definitely felt like my skin feels soft after use, and it would be ok to use on it’s own if I wasn’t wearing any makeup and was keeping up with washing my face twice a day. Definitely very gentle and non irritating at all. I used about 3-4 pumps per wash.
Anti-Aging Serum: Loved the smell of this serum!! VERY strong and woody /grounding smelling. Used 2 pumps per use and it wore great both as a daytime serum (even under makeup) or a nighttime one! Didn’t feel sticky at all after drying and great for locking in moisture. Didn’t notice any major differences in my skin as far as tightening feeling, but love using it as a preventative serum for environmental stresses on the skin.
Anti-aging Eye Cream: very creamy/lotion-y consistency to it, plant like/ earthy smell, only takes 1 pump (or less)/ a little goes a long way, easily and smoothly rubs into skin. Doesn’t feel super thick or too heavy on the skin, but definitely moisturizing. It makes the skin feel slightly slick…like it doesn’t absorb all the way, so for that reason I tend to only use it in my nightly regimen. I’m not super dry under my eyes though, so I’d imagine for those who are more dry throughout the day that this would make a great day wear eye cream as well. I didn’t notice any huge difference in my under eye area except for it being well moisturized. I think this is best used as a long term, preventative type product. I do love the enriching ingredients list!
Herbal Facial Oil for Normal & Combination Skin: I loved this facial oil! Definitely very “oily” feeling so I could only usually use it at night personally. If I did use it during the day, it would be a very small amount on the driest parts of my combination face (my cheeks) which definitely helped them not flake after applying makeup! My skin always felt so soft afterwards and very well moisturized when I woke up in the morning. Again love the earthy smell; it really works to balance skin oils and imperfections because of ingredients like the tamanu oil and grapeseed oil etc in it! Glad it wasn’t too heavy feeling for my oily/combo skin.
Illuminating Pearl Mask: a very gentle and mild brightening face mask, great for sensitive skin. Feels veryyyy sticky or gummy while on face and as it dries, you can leave it on for a while without it irritating or drying out too much. Love the refreshing and strong scent and it’s calming ingredients! This isn’t to the same level as a vitamin C treatment kind of brightening, but if those are too harsh for you, this might be a nice alternative! It comes off pretty easily, best way I found was with a wash cloth of some sort with water because of the slimy type consistency, which takes a little while to get off with just water alone. Overall, in my opinion, most ideal for normal to dry skin or those sensitive to other brightening type products.
Antioxidant Lip Balm: I don’t know why, but I found the size and shape of this balm Adorable!! haha It lasted about 4-5 months of pretty much everyday use. It smells very strongly like honey (from the beeswax), is very smooth and easy to apply, and it’s very calming and moisturizing. It unfortunately can’t replace the original burt’s bees one I use (for whatever reason the only chap stick that actually “heals” my lips and feels like the old carmex brand is the OG burts bees chap stick! It doesn’t just moisturize my super chapped and dry lips, it heals them! I’m actively trying to find a replacement though, as I ultimately don’t recommend or trust this company because it’s owned by clorox). Either way, I did love applying this as I got ready in the morning before applying any lipstick, right before bed, or just throughout the day.
Beauty Blend Tea: Really like this tea! It definitely has that very natural, “dirt” smell and taste to it, so I added a bit of honey to take the edge off. Not bitter tasting, just very “earthy”. That’s been the theme word with this brand! haha It’s great! All ingredients are organic (except for the lemongrass), all are tested for purity, and it falls below the CA Prop 65 standards which is great! I also love how there’s many great herbs in this tea that support detoxification (like the dandelion) and are high in antioxidants! Great for nourishing the skin from within! Love the loose leaf tea because you don’t have to worry about the bag leaching into the water. (I personally like and use this lead-free stainless steel tea strainer off my amazon storefront)
